My 2023 Goals

Two years ago I set a new years resolution to “become a Linux kernel developer”.

Then I spent literally hundreds of hours installing various distros, learning to build the Linux kernel from scratch, creating initram disks, writing bootstraps and bundling the lot into bootable ISO’s. Not forgetting to virtualise everything under QEMU and mucking around with various module/make build settings.

I achieved my goal but ultimately decided the personal price (as a dad with family commitments) was too high, particularly since all my professional expertise is with the Microsoft C# .Net language/stack, which I love. Towards the end of 2022, I was invited to become an open-source maintainer for a .Net Foundation project, spectre.console, and I plan to continue in that thoroughly enjoyable role throughout 2023.

Goal setting is immensively powerful when aligned to your intrinsic motivators, nb. mine isn’t money.
